> Revise in short, repeated passes: review new material within a day, again after a few days, then after weeks, and test yourself from memory each time instead of re-reading.

**Key takeaways**

- Revise in several short passes, not one long one.
- Test yourself from memory instead of re-reading.
- Fix the schedule by calendar, not by mood.

## Why does re-reading fail?

Re-reading feels productive because the page looks familiar, but familiarity is not recall. In the exam you must produce the answer from memory, so practise that directly.

## What is spaced repetition?

Spaced repetition means meeting the same material again at increasing gaps. A common pattern is: the day after learning, three to four days later, about two weeks later, then monthly until the exam. Each pass can be short because you are refreshing, not relearning.

**A sample revision rhythm**

| When | What to do | How long |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Next day | Recall the topic from memory, then check notes | 15 to 20 minutes |
| Day 4 | Solve a few questions on it | 20 minutes |
| Week 2 | Recall and solve mixed questions | 30 minutes |
| Monthly | Take a timed test that includes it | Full test |

## How do I use active recall?

Close the book and write down everything you remember about the topic, then check what you missed. Practise with [explained questions](/sample-questions); the explanation is the check. After each mock, feed your mistakes into the plan using the method in [how to analyse a mock test](/blog/how-to-analyse-a-mock-test).

> **Common mistake** Adding new topics every day without revisiting old ones. Reserve a fixed share of each week for revision only.

## Frequently asked questions

### How much of my time should go to revision?

Many students keep roughly a third of their weekly time for revision in the early months and more as the exam nears. Adjust to your own results.

### Is making notes necessary?

Short notes help if you use them for recall. Copying a textbook into notes is not revision.

### What if I fall behind on the schedule?

Skip ahead rather than catch up on everything. Prioritise topics with the highest weight and your weakest scores.
